The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is about insurance portability, fraud, and administrative simplification.  This course examines the Administrative Simplification portion of the HIPAA legislation, addressing HIPAA requirements in the areas of Transactions, Privacy, and Security to achieve HIPAA compliance.

Objectives

  • Understanding how HIPAA requirements necessitate changes in policies, procedures and processes concerning an organization's handling patient records.

  • Examining how HIPAA affects the way healthcare entities organize and staff to achieve and monitor compliance with patient privacy and confidentiality requirements.

  • Stepping through qualifications and positioning strategies for Privacy and Security Officers.

  • Learning why HIPAA compliance is better focused as a business issue rather than an IT issue, although IT plays a major role in implementing HIPAA-compliant systems.

  • Reviewing specific requirements and implementation features within each HIPAA security category.
